On February 6th, I got this crazy idea to extend a challenge to all real-life exterminators. Whoever could claim Google’s top organic ranking for the Key Phrase “World’s Coolest Exterminator” on May 6th would win the challenge.
Why Did I Put Out The Challenge?
More than anything, I felt it would give the contestants social media material. Exterminating companies have it tough in the “Land of Facebook”. I mean, who wants to “like” us? Some people would view that as practically saying “I USED TO HAVE BUGS!”.
Our industry isn’t sexy. People want to learn how to fix their pest problems (or find somebody to do it for them), then go about their day.
And that’s how it is- The internet is GREAT at helping folks identify and research pests they encounter, but that’s not the kind of thing you’re going to “tweet” about, is it?
So How Do Exterminators Get “Social Network” Attention?
We have to do cool things, create content that people want to talk/read about.
Which brings us back to my “Coolest Exterminator” challenge….
The first photo of this post shows the search query for the contest’s key phrase. As you can see, there weren’t a whole lot of sites attempting to rank for it.
Stayed tuned for frequent updates to see how this pans out!
First update on the World’s Coolest Exterminator: Sunday February 9th
So this morning, I decide to check the rankings and what do I see? This guy (pictured) has taken the lead. I used a regular Chrome browser that was logged into my personal Google account, and then, for good measure, even checked it in Incognito mode, results were the same regardless. Props to him!
The only other contestant found on the first four pages was yours truly at spots #12 and #28. My highest position was actually a Google Plus post.
I know it’s very early, but it’s time a few other of these “Cool” pest professionals step up to the plate. We don’t want this to be a two horse race, do we?
Yesterday was a big day for the challenge – well….. maybe not for everyone, but it was a big day for me. The Titus Pest Control Facebook page earned the top spot in Google’s search results. My initial reaction was that it a situation with the Google servers linking up, but the same results were displayed today.
I must admit, the Facebook page is an odd choice for a number one ranking. It has little informational value in comparison to some blog posts.
As of today, there are three pages associated with Steve Jackson or Titus Pest Control displayed in the top ten for “World’s Coolest Exterminator”.
Update: 04/30/14 One Week Left!
Wow! Leave things alone for a while and they fall apart. The Slideshare page is number two in the rankings, but my other pages are near the bottom of the top ten.
Being the World’s Coolest Exterminator is not easy, but ranking number one for the keyword has become pretty difficult. Congrats to Joseph for knowing enough to leave things alone, as tinkering/manipulating things can have a negative effect. His single post is currently holding the top spot for “World’s Coolest ….”
Here’s the Slideshare page I was referring to:
